STARBRIGHT MUSIC
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I copyright my song title?
There are many songs with the same title. So what you actually can copyright, is YOUR VERSION of that song
title, ie, your specific song. Any writer, any time, before
or after your song, has been free and is free to use the same title.

Do I need to PAY a publisher to publish my song?
You should NEVER, repeat NEVER, have to pay a publisher to publish your song. It is a publisher's job to exploit, in the positive sense of that word, your intellectual property, and to do so, they are compensated by a portion of the future royalties, if there are any.
But you do not, or SHOULD NOT "sell" your song
to anyone (giving up permanently any future right to the song) nor ever pay a publisher to own a piece of your work.
The opposite should hold true.
Songs live on. They should be published and registered
with a Performance Rights Organization -PRO- (BMI, SESAC, ASCAP, etc.) which monitor broadcasts/airplay, so that they will go on to benefit YOU, the writer. Do not sign over completely the rights to any of your works, ie, "sell" a song.
While it is normal and acceptable to pay for a song
critique or career consultation--those are SEPARATE and EDUCATIONAL TOOLS-- when it comes to the
song itself, you should NOT pay someone to have the
privilege of exploiting your song...ie, getting it cut or
put into print.
Are my songs safe when I send them off to a publisher?
Professional, ethical publishers who are established Music
Industry names, will probably NEVER steal a song.
You have the responsibility yourself, to be sure that you
are sending your songs to reputable organizations.
should never worry about your intellectual property. It
(Click either blue text in the paragraph above for details...)
We do repeat, however, not to ever send us your ONLY
copy for critiquing. While we will return your music once
the critique is done, we cannot foresee "accidents", ie
lost or stolen items. Your ORIGINAL VERSION OF YOUR SONG SHOULD ALWAYS STAY IN YOUR POSSESSION.
Only send/give COPIES of your work.
Do I need to live in a major music center to be a success?
No. Many songwriters AND recording artists live away
from major music centers. It must be said, however,
that there is always business to conduct in the music
centers, and if say, Nashville is the place where your
songs are being pitched and demo-ed, it is highly advisable to have a "presence" from time to time there.
There are many opportunities, both in songwriting, and
networking "the biz" in general, that present themselves
if you live in a music center day in and day out.
However, StarBright Music and Creative Group President
has definitely proved by her own example, that is is
POSSIBLE to get major cuts and experience success...
without living in LA, Nashville, or New York.
It may require a higher level of consistency and committment, but YOU CAN DO IT!
I want to demo my songs in Nashville. Can StarBright help me find an excellent producer there?
